my job is kicking my ass
for a part time position, I sure am putting a lot of effort into this place:
In order to be there by 7:45 am, I must get out of bed by 5:30. Then, I begin taking tables from 8-3.
Sounds pretty simple, except I am NONSTOP TAKING TABLES, with no time for a meal or even a snack, barely time to take a drink of water, let alone go to the bathroom.
Federal law dictates I receive a 15 minute break for every 4 hours worked. Anyone who has ever worked in a restaurant will get a laugh at the idea of my asking for a break when the place is slammed.
And it’s always slammed.
So you can imagine the shock and horror I felt yesterday when, after barely (AND I DO MEAN BARELY) holding on until the hour of 3 (and with my last table sitting down at 2:57, goddamnit) my manager tells me that when we’re busy, we keep taking tables until, well, until they stop coming in.
I finally broke down and told her that if she wanted me to take tables past 3, I would be more than happy to do so, but only if I came in later than 7:30 in the morning. I am not trying to be a pain or a shirker, but I am not physically capable of non-stop work at a frenzied pace for more than 7 hours without any food or break or bathroom trips.
I don’t understand why she seems confused by this?
Am I being unreasonable?
Needless to say, I am not sure that they are happy with me for the abovementioned reasons, so I am off to another job interview this afternoon. Hopefully it will be a place NOT run by obvious animatrons.
